Thoughts on the Rafah Border Crossing
Was commenting on Alex´s posting that was brutally criticized by Luly :)
What I think:
"...With regards to Gaza, I agree with most of the decisions made by the Egyptian government but then not with the way things were handled with regards to communicate stands and reacting to criticism and dissent (delaying printing of newspapers till pieces criticizing Mubarak were removed)..."
"Keeping the border closed means that Sinai is not and will not be the new home of Gazans and Hamas. The last time the borders were open, we had bombings in Taba, Sharm El Sheikh and Dahab. The last time we opened the borders, the Gazans stayed and did not want to leave and they were paying for Egyptian products with forged Dollars.
Israel is the occupier and Israel needs to take responsibility for the suffereing of the Palestinian people.
Egypt is to help in times of crisis by letting aid in and should not do much more. Moreover, opening the border without the EU observes and the Palestinian authority means support and strengthening of Hamas, which can be one of the worst thing for peace in the Middle East. Having Hamas is good since it is true that the Israelis need to feel the pressure to make concessions but too much Hamas will just mean too much blood.
Therefore, I believe Hamas need to stay but then coming to the negotiation table. It is true that Egypt got on he negotiation table only after a war but then the Palestinians can´t really wage a war and no Arab government will fight it for them even if it was an economic rather than a military war.
Well, thats what I think..."
